MG MGB Technical - B/GT Tailgate Stay Cover
The (chrome plastic) covers on our B/GT tailgate stay springs are cracked. I purchased new covers before I had a good look at the top retaining pin for the spring attachment. Anyone have experience removing and replacing the top pin to install new covers, yes the one that looks to be secured with a hammer & punch? Regards, Larry C. '74 B/GT |

I'd like to know this too. |

If you are talking about the domed plastic retaining clips, then you just lever them off with a scredriver, push 'em back with your thumb. Neil |

larry there metal clamp on kind of clips which need to be damaged to get off then put new ones on pushing them with your hand so you dont kink them ste |

They are spring clips, definitely reusable if you lever them off carefully. No need to dissassemble the spring, just remove clips, take off cover, put clips back on. Most likely problem is cracking the cover when you lever off the spring clip, not a problem if you have new covers! Neil |

Neil & Ste, Thank you for your help lads. The original caps have aged well, and look very metalic. So much so, I did think them part of the spring assembly pivot bolts. I have one removed, and now I see in MOSS have new ones (caps) available should I damage any of the others. Cheers, Larry C. '74 B/GT |

FWIW - I offer a gas charged strut kit for the MGB/GT and MGC/GT through "Pieces of Eight!"![]() |
