MG MGB Technical - Engine 18V 647E

I've got a MGB GT 1972.
Looking at chassis n°, original engine was 18V-582-F-H/8856.

My engine now shows 18V 647E H250709.

I cannot find this number on any book, website, etc.
Is that a MG engine reference ?
Can anybody help me finding out more about this engine ?

Raphael,

the engine No. you quoted belongs to a comercial. Hanomag and Mercedes Benz used BMC 18V engines for their 207 modell transporters. With some changings of bolt on hardware, they fit an MG B quite well and have a performance rate that matches with late UK spec MG B's when fitted with dual SU's.

The main difference is the cam, that is grid for torque at low rpm and was never used on MG's, Marinas, Austin's etc.

Hope that helps

Thanks for your prompt reply!
Any idea where to find setting information such as compression ratio, static timing or valve timing ?

Raphael,

although looking for the deatails since some time allredy, i never found a solution what the E is standing for. May be 'Export' or 'Europe'... there are no details to be found on the web, i think.

The H says that it is a HC version of the engine.

I also tried to figure out the cam timing but it can only be mesured, as there are no information given anywhere and Mercedes Benz has no interest in this engine any more and there is nothing left of the BMC to source out such questions. If you can find an old Service garage for this cars, they might have information left about it. As the Mercedes 207 was a badge engined Hanomag F20 after Mercedes Benz bought Hanomag in the late 1960's, it might be useful to do some investigations in this direction, although the Hanomag most often was fitted with the 1622 ccm BMC B-Series engine in those days.

Ignition timing is not that critical, i think and i would set it to a statical 6 to 8 deg before TDC and check out how much is possible by further advancing the distributer.

These engines were rated at 80 DIN HP when fitted with a Solex 34 downdraft carurater, so changing to SU's should allow @ 84 HP, using a distributer from a B will also be beneficial as the car is much lighter than the van the engine was taken from.

Ralph,

The engine prefix letter codes are:

AE - single carb, emission control, north america (NA)

E - single carb, no emission control, UK export except NA

F - twin carb, no emission control, UK & export except NA

Y - 'alternative' carbs, no emission control, export except NA

Z - twin carbs, emission control NA only

This applies to all BMC engines post 18V - so the 'E' engines come from any single carb application like the Sherpa van or Morris Marina.
