MG MGF Technical - CRACK IN REAR WINDOW
Yesterday early in the morning about 8 degrees Celsius but the soft top was absolutely dry, so I couldn't resist to open the top. But the sad thing was a crack about 5 inches long when opening the roof. Any suggestions? Is it possible to replace and what is the price? Anyone experienced the same problem? Have to say that my F is from 96, owned since May 99 and always parked outside. Cheers Marc |

Marco, It's a common problem when the weather turns cold. Search the archive and you will find much information. You can buy the rear piece of the hood with the window in from one of the F specialists. Or you can buy a complete new hood for three times the price from MG. Andy |

I have had a split rear screen for years and all I do is put tarpaulin tape on it which seems to keep it together and stops it getting worst. The way I see it when it is dry the roof is down so don't notice the split and when wet you cannot see out of the rear window to well so again does not make much difference. The difference is in your wallet the tape only cost a couple of quid and you can always put more on. Tom |

It really is AMAZING that even now, after all these years of open top cars and advanced technology, someone STILL hasn't produced a flexible rear window material that doesn't degrade, crack, mist over et cetera, and that stays flexible in cold weather!! |

I am sure that if it was possible to make such an item Simon then someone would make it - unfortunately a platic that meets all of the desired criteria has not yet been invented. The alternative is to use glass BUT glass will not bend so it would involve a major redesign of either the hood or the car or even both to allow a window of a reasonable size to fit into a folding roof and for the roof to fold flat. Point taken Simon but if such a material was available do you think manufacturers would use it and lose the revenue from the sale of replacement rear screens? Mike. |

Ted, I'm sure it already exists a plastic like this. Man has invented materials far more complicated than that. It's a matter of cost, only. Cheers, Valter. |

you could always replace the screen with black canvas like the roof if you never use it. this would not be illegal. |

Mike, Valter I am the ultimate old cynic but I can not agree with Mike:-) And Valter you may be right but it would have to be 'bloody' expensive to ruled out on cost! Ted |

I had this befopre I sold my F, 100 quid from Mike Satur for a replacement. You need a small drill (to remove old pop rivets) and a poprivet gun to fit the new one. |

Hello guys, thank you very much for the informations. For the moment I put a nice tape over the crack and it already had to withstand a heavy rainshower tonight. No problem at all. Perhaps I will replace the rear piece of the hood somewhen in the future. Marco |

Search the archive. Lots of people have had rear screens replaced by car trimming companies. Several have been identified in the UK but maybe not Switzerland. |

Tony, that's "Pot-rivets", not pop. Of all the people... |

I use Sellotape All Weather tape on the cracks on my rear screen. The tape is intended for the repair of cloches and green houses, so it doesn't go yellow like standard Sellotape. Ralph |
